There is one currency – Super Credits – which can be bought with real money, but developer Arrowhead Game Studios has insisted that the stuff this buys (mostly body armour and helmets) isn’t necessary for progression, and you can earn Super Credits in the game anyway. Helldivers 2 ditches the iconic twin-stick shooter gameplay of the first game and completely replaces it with a new third-person over-the-shoulder view. While we’ll have to wait and see which Helldivers game did it better, being down below where the action will undoubtedly intensify things.

Some missions require a blitz approach. While you don’t need to rush most of the quarenta-minute missions, some are much shorter and require a fast 15-minute clear. Try to, at the very least, collect the beams of light and samples that you find in the field that are near your critical path.

One of the most interesting aspects is that mission progress is something the entire player base works toward together. Each of these hostile planets comes with a percentage meter that ticks further toward “liberation” every time a real-life squad completes a mission there. Once the planet is liberated, everyone unlocks new areas and missions.

Creating your loadout feels like part of the mission prep: changing your weapon to suit not only your appetite for destruction but the mission and enemy types you might encounter.

There are some genuine frame-rate drops in the mix, with the game dropping to the high 20s, although these aren't very common. The PC version has a serviceable options menu with a typical range of selectables, including texture quality, shadow quality, volumetrics quality, and options for screen-space reflections and screen-space global illuminations. Sticking to the standard quality presets, low settings dramatically alters the terrain and decimates shadows and should really be avoided if at all possible. Medium makes the terrain match the collison, greatly improves shadow res, and adds TAA, ambient occlusion, and additional foliage. The high preset adds in more foliage and improves shadows, and the ultra preset looks very similar to high but with extra shadow detail. Performance-wise, there's a huge FPS boost by sliding down to the low preset, though the other presets are pretty similar in performance based on testing using an RTX 4090.

Missions vary from raising patriotic flags to realigning communications equipment and rescuing civilian colonists, but there are Helldivers 2 Gameplay always side tasks too, including destroying bases and exploring abandoned research stations. You may also discover Samples, which can be collected to buy spacecraft upgrades, and Medals, which get you new armour and custom items. The main currency is Requisition Slips, which pay for new Strategems from a vast and exotic list.
